Revolutionising carpentry:

The journey of United Design & Renovation with CABINET VISION

In the bustling city of Johor Bahru, Malaysia, a traditional carpentry company has made remarkable strides towards modernisation by integrating the latest technology  into its operations.

The background

Despite being founded by two directors, Michael and Alice, who had no background in cabinet making, United Design & Renovation navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and emerged stronger thanks in part to
CABINET VISION

The story of United Design & Renovation began just before the pandemic, when  Michael and Alice recognised a gap in the market and decided to venture into  cabinet making. Despite a lack of experience, they wanted to offer quality and competitively-priced cabinets primarily to customers in nearby Singapore. The geographical proximity and lower costs compared to Singaporean cabinet makers gave them a strategic advantage. Michael, who also managed a heavy industry machine repair business, quickly realised that the traditional methods employed  by their carpenters were inefficient and inconsistent, especially when compared to the precision and professionalism he was accustomed to in industrial settings.
This thus sparked his interest in finding an automated solution to streamline their processes.

The search for automation

Michael embarked on a long research journey, exploring various software solutions that could enhance their
workflow. Initial attempts were frustrating as many of the software options available were not user friendly or suitable for their specific needs. It was during this search that he discovered CABINET VISION, a design-to-manufacturing software created for the cabinet making industry.

The breakthrough came with the support of Smart Connected Solutions SEA, a regional provider that offered comprehensive training, consultation, and technical support across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Their expertise in modernising traditional cabinet making  businesses would soon prove valuable

Navigating the pandemic

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges. The Malaysian government imposed several Movement Control Orders (MCOs) from 2020 to 2021, forcing many manufacturers to shut down due to labor shortages and operational restrictions. United Design & Renovation Sdn Bhd was no exception. The situation was exacerbated when their carpenters demanded higher wages to continue working amidst the crisis.

However, the pre-pandemic purchase of CABINET VISION turned out to be a fortuitous decision. Although the factory had to pause operations during the MCO, this downtime provided Michael with an opportunity to delve deeply into the software. He dedicated himself to mastering CABINET VISION, transforming what could have been a period of stagnation into one of learning and growth.

Embracing Technology

When the factory reopened, Michael and Ms. Alice were ready. Armed with new skills and a thorough understanding of CABINET VISION, they integrated the software into their operations, starting with generating precise files for their CNC machine. This transition marked a significant shift in their manufacturing process. The reliance on traditional 'Sifu' (master craftsmen) was reduced, as the software enabled even less experienced workers to produce high-quality work with consistent accuracy.
The implementation of CABINET VISION not only improved efficiency but also elevated the overall quality of their products. Michael and Ms. Alice's insistence on leveraging technology rather than relying solely on human expertise proved to be a game-changer. United Design & Renovation Sdn Bhd could now meet the demands of their clients with greater speed and reliability.

Leading the Community

The success story of United Design & Renovation Sdn Bhd quickly spread throughout Johor Bahru's community of carpenters and cabinet makers. Many companies became curious about how these two newcomers managed to revolutionize their business and operate without relying on traditional 'Sifu' expertise. This curiosity led to numerous visits to United Design & Renovation Sdn Bhd, where Michael and Ms. Alice openly shared their experiences and insights.
Their willingness to make friends and share knowledge has had a ripple effect. Inspired by United Design & Renovation Sdn Bhd's example, many carpentry businesses in Johor Bahru have started adopting CABINET VISION and CNC machines. This shift is transforming the local industry, promoting greater efficiency, and elevating the quality of craftsmanship across the region.

A New Era for Johor Bahru's Cabinet Makers

Today, United Design & Renovation Sdn Bhd stands as a testament to the power of innovation in transforming traditional industries. By embracing CABINET VISION, they have not only survived the pandemic but have also positioned themselves for future growth. Their story serves as an inspiration to other traditional businesses facing similar challenges, demonstrating that with the right tools and a willingness to adapt, modernization is within reach.
Michael and Ms. Alice continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in cabinet making, driven by a commitment to excellence and a forward-thinking approach. Their journey highlights the importance of resilience and innovation in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of manufacturing. With their success, they are leading a revolution among Johor Bahru's cabinet makers, proving that the future of carpentry lies in embracing technology and continuous improvement.
